Standard Definition Format

This is the most common channel type. The resolution is always 704 x 480 pixels and is roughly equal in quality to the current analog resolution. All channels will initially be broadcast in this format unless the channel has opted for a higher resolution format. The Standard Definition Format (SD) has two options on formatting the signal. 480i is where half of the picture updates every 60th of a second. 480p the full picture updates every 60th of a second. Standard Definition format channels can be broadcast in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.
