How digital TV works

Each broadcaster is given one digital channel that they can do with as they wish. Each channel can broadcast multiple sub-channels which can carry different programming. Since each channel has an allowed 19.39 Mbps transfer rate each broadcaster can choose how they want to split that bandwidth up. They can have multi lower resolution channels or one super high def channel. Broadcasters can currently chose from 2 different resolutions. The three formats are 704×480 pixels, 1280×1080 pixels and 1980×1080 pixels.
